Class Information: Heavy weight Pacific locomotives designed for Top Link passenger services on the Southern Railway were conceived during hostilities of World War 2. The Merchant Navy class were nicknamed “Spam Cans” due to their unorthodox appearance. A total of 30 locomotives were constructed, all named after steam ship lines operating out of Southampton Docks. Both the rebuilt Merchant Navy Class and Coronation Class locomotives are a new generation of models for the new millennium. Produced to the exacting Super Detail standard, both models include in their specification blackened finish handrails and wheels plus etched brass valve gear and detailed cab interior. They also feature a five pole motor housed in their respective locomotive bodies for precise slow speed running.

YEAR INFORMATION
2000 Probably the most famous of the Merchant Navy Class. ‘Clan Line’ was the last of its type to be rebuilt in October 1969. At that time the locomotive had achieved a mileage of 401,005 but, by the time of withdrawal by BR in July 1967, Clan Line had achieved a total of 794,39I miles. Rescued from the cutters torch by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Society in the same month of withdrawal, the Iocomotive was Eventually put on shed at Ashford, Kent and used to pull special trains over the B.R. network. In 1975 Clan Line was moved to the Bulmer Railway Centre in Hereford where it continued to be used with special trains and also as an exhibit at various rail shows. CIan Line is in continuous service and can be seen running on the main line pulling steam specials.
