2000 | Designed by William Stanier, Duchess of Hamilton first went to traffic in October 1938, however its first duties were in the USA where it was used to great effect promoting the LMS Coronation Scot train at the New York Worlds fair in 1939. However the name and number that it carried during the tour was that of 6220 Coronation. While the Coronation locomotive was named and numbered as Duchess of Hamilton. When the Duchess returned to England in 1942 the names were changed and the Coronation reverted back to Duchess of Hamilton and vice versa Duchess of HamiIton may once more take to the rails, fully streamlined in this Millennium yean as it is quite possible that she will be the principal steam locomotive used by Venice-Simplon Orient Express for their planned new north of England luxury charter train service to be launched, hopefully during the year The stunning new model from Hornby depicts Duchess of Hamilton in the LMS crimson lake livery reminiscent of the 1930s and as the suggested colour scheme proposed by the VSOE for their new service. |
