Year: 1995
Catalogue Number: R.320
Year Information: Designed by the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Southern Railway, Mr O.V.S. Bullied, Exeter was the first of the light Pacific West Country Class locomotives to be built at Brighton. Initially 20 locomotives were ordered in April 1941, followed by a further 10 in September 1944. The first of these locomotives was delivered in May 1945 but due to boiler defects trial runs did not actually commence until early June. Eventually Souther Railway locomotive number 21C101, entered service on the 21st June 1945 and was subsequently named Exeter in July of the same year.
After many miles of service, 1,079,957 in total, plus surviving several livery changes and a re-build, Exeter was withdrawn from service in July 1967 and by September 1968 had fallen prey to the scrapmans torch.
