Company Information: The Baltimore & Ohio was the earliest commercial railroad in the USA constructed primarily to compete with the Erie Canal transporting goods through the North Eastern States. Primarily a coal moving entity through the Appalachian mountain range the railroad made famous passenger trains a lucrative business serving major centers between Washington and New York.
In a very competitive market B&O filed for bankruptcy protection on more than one occasion. At various times B&O was controlled by the Pennsylvania and Chesapeake and Ohio Railroads; finally becoming part of the giant CSX system in 1986.
By 1971 all passenger services were relinquished to the government run Amtrak.
