Class Information: Heavy weight Pacific locomotives designed for Top Link passenger services on the Southern Railway were conceived during hostilities of World War 2. The Merchant Navy class were nicknamed “Spam Cans” due to their unorthodox appearance. A total of 30 locomotives were constructed, all named after steam ship lines operating out of Southampton Docks. Year Information: Allocated to Bournemouth ‘Port Line’ was officially named at Southampton Docks on 24 April 1950. Along with others in the Class ’Port Line' was rebuilt and returned to traffic in May 1957. Two years later this engine had the honour of pulling the Royal train from Windsor to Hamworthy Junction where the train was berthed overnight. The stunning Hornby model is fully equipped with separately fitted detail parts and is powered by a 5 pole motor located under the locomotive body.
