Class Information: Heavy weight Pacific locomotives designed for Top Link passenger services on the Southern Railway were conceived during hostilities of World War 2. The Merchant Navy class were nicknamed “Spam Cans” due to their unorthodox appearance. A total of 30 locomotives were constructed, all named after steam ship lines operating out of Southampton Docks. Company Information: British Railways came into existence in 1948 when the dominating four British railway companies amalgamated. Steam traction on British Railways ended in 1968 and the system was re-branded as British Rail.

Year Information: British Railways number 35029 ‘Ellerman Lines' entered traffic on 19 February 1949 and was officially named at Southampton Docks on the I March 1951 by Mr A. F. Hull. Chairman of Ellerman Lines. The locomotive was eventually withdrawn from service only 17 years after it had been built and was stored for a short while at Weymouth Shed before being sent to Barry for scrap in May 1967. In January 1974 'Ellerman Lines' was 'rescued' by the NRM and placed as a sectioned exhibit at the Museum in York where it can be seen today.
