Locomotive Class
Class 4P Tank
Class: Class 4P Tank
Type: Steam
Designer: Henry Fowler
Weight: 86 tons
Purpose: Suburban Passenger
Information: This early Fowler design formed the basis of many subsequent Class 4 designs that were to follow, through to the final British Railway’s Standard Class 4MT design of 1951.
Details: Between 1927 and 1934 the London Midland Railway built a total of 125 Class 4 tank engines with the intent purpose of suburban traffic working and empty stock shunting in larger urban areas through-out the region. Production was all completed at Derby Locomotive Works with construction being split into six orders.
The 2-6-4 wheel arrangement locomotive was fitted with two outside cylinders. The open side cab was a vestige to past designs. Subsequent builds by Stanier, Fairburn, and Riddles all featured closed cabs for improved crew comfort.
Originally the locomotives were out-shopped in full LMS passenger livery and looked smart indeed. In service the livery quickly gave way to basic black. Subsequent repaints in later years did not change the black scheme although many were treated to mixed traffic lining in British Railway’s days.
Although newer designs added to the roosters the earliest design locomotives worked alongside later builds until the end of steam in many areas. Unlike later designs none were preserved.
