Information: Intended for inter–regional and suburban passenger workings through-out areas served by the London Midland Railway (LMS) the class was Introduced 1928.
Details: The class designated 2P by the LMS, were in reality successors to the Midland Railways (MR) produced Class 483 built from 1892 to 1921 of which 165 had been built. A further 138 2P’s were produced at either Crewe or Derby Locomotive Works between 1928 and 1932. The locomotive layout was a basic and well-proven 2-inside frame cylinder design characteristic of typical MR design.
In addition to being employed by the LMS, 3 of the locomotives were allocated to the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR). 2P’s were often double-headed where loads dictated, primarily as the LMS had a shortage of larger and heavy duty or express locomotives for such service.
Typically painted in basic black livery by the LMS, other colour schemes did prevail. The S&DJR locomotives were painted Prussian Blue and in later BR days the locomotives were appropriately lined-out for mixed traffic working in accordance with British Railways policy.
The first two members were withdrawn and scrapped in 1934, whilst remaining members all saw service into BR days. Remaining locomotives were gradually withdrawn between 1954 and 1962. Regrettably, none were preserved.
