Class Information: Heavy weight Pacific locomotives designed for Top Link passenger services on the Southern Railway were conceived during hostilities of World War 2. The Merchant Navy class were nicknamed “Spam Cans” due to their unorthodox appearance. A total of 30 locomotives were constructed, all named after steam ship lines operating out of Southampton Docks. Both the rebuilt Merchant Navy Class and Coronation Class locomotives are a new generation of models for the new millennium. Produced to the exacting Super Detail standard, both models include in their specification blackened finish handrails and wheels plus etched brass valve gear and detailed cab interior. They also feature a five pole motor housed in their respective locomotive bodies for precise slow speed running.

Company Information: British Railways came into existence in 1948 when the dominating four British railway companies amalgamated. Steam traction on British Railways ended in 1968 and the system was re-branded as British Rail.

Year Information: The fifth locomotive in the Class, 'Canadian Pacific' left Eastleigh Works in December 1941 but did not enter traffic until January 1942 continuing in service until the end of 1964. Rebuilt in 1959 and rescued for preservation in 1973, this superb example of its class can now be seen, liveried in blue, hauling special steam excursions on the mainline. The Hornby model powered by a 5 pole motor depicts 'Canadian Pacific' in its modern-day livery and can quite legitimately appear on a modern image railway layout.
