Model Catalogue Information

YEAR INFORMATION
1977 Fitted with Magnadhesion.
1978 Commonly known as the Hymek and exclusively used on the Western region of British Rail, 101 of these locomotives were introduced. They were powerful locomotives for their weight, largely due to their massive Bristol-Siddeley/Maybach engine powering hydraulic traction motors. Only one of these locomotives escaped the scrapheap and that is being preserved by the Diesel and Electric Group in Somerset. This final resting place on the Taunton to Minehead line is particularly appropriate in that the class was originally intended to work in the Bristol, Newton Abbott and South Wales areas hauling freight and lightly loaded passenger services. The performance of our model has been much improved by the use of new bogies, a heavy chassis and a Silver Seal Ringfield motor unit. The Hornby model is decorated in the attractive green livery appropriate to the early 1960s when the class was introduced.
